Online Gentle Yoga for Arthritis

Class Size
10
Duration
60 Minutes
Price
$40 for 8 week term

It has been found that a sustained practice of gentle yoga together with mindfulness and meditation will help to relieve the symptoms of arthritis by cultivating more flexibility, body awareness and relaxation helping you to live a little easier and bring back joy to your life.

A gentle yoga practice can help to minimise the erosion of cartilage which causes joint aching and stiffness.  Yoga will help to increase mobility, balance and flexibility.

Some of the effects of arthritis are brought about through poor posture, repetitive movement and lack of body awareness.  Yoga brings a greater awareness of how you are moving, sitting, walking and standing, enabling you to become more conscious of your posture and feeling your limitations.  Yoga will help to correct postural problems through mindful awareness.

Yoga with mindfulness is particularly helpful in reducing stress levels and the effects which stress has on the nervous system.  Stress is a common problem for people living with pain and can cause symptoms to worsen. If your arthritis is severe, yoga and meditation can teach you how to cope better with pain.

Whether you suffer with aching stiff joints from Osterarthritis or Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Ankylosing Spondylitis, lower back pain or other chronic diseases you will begin to find relief, release of tension and inner peace.

There is no requirement to be strong or flexible as movements are gentle and tailored to each person’s abilities and limitations.

You will start to feel the positive effects after your first class, and as you continue to practice and integrate Yoga and meditation into your life you will start to regain a positive outlook on life.

In the classes, we practice what the ancient Yogis know, “that controlling the breath is the precursor to controlling everything in your life – the physical body, the emotions and the spirit”.  Breathing is the key to success in yoga practice. This is what sets Yoga apart from other forms of exercise, although all movement is helpful.

The breath is used to calm the overtaxed nervous system and induce relaxation, which will unlock the tightness in the body.

A strong emphasis is placed on breathing gently and evenly through the postures to induce relaxation, slow and gentle movement, without force.

It is best that your doctor approves you to undertake a practice of gentle yoga.

Participants will need to be able to move up and down from the floor.

Bring own Yoga Mat and water.

No prior experience in the practice of Yoga is required.

Hatha yoga is an ancient systematic practice to improve the body, understand the mind and free the spirit.  Nothing will happen in the external body without first happening inside.  A common misconception held by people is that you need to be young, fit and strong to do yoga, and there are many yoga classes that will give you this.  However, Hatha, known as the gentle yoga, works from the inside outwards.

Strengthening and calming the nervous system, increasing blood flow to internal organs and breathing more oxygen into every cell.  You will begin to clear the mental clutter that can cause so many problems in your life.

Hatha yoga gives you tools to help overcome one of the biggest factors undermining health and well-being in the modern world; an out of balance stress response system.

In the classes, we practice what the ancient Yogis know, “that controlling the breath is the precursor to controlling everything in your life – the physical body, the emotions and the spirit”.  Breathing is the key to success in yoga practice. This is what sets Hatha Yoga apart from other forms of exercise, although all movement is helpful.

The breath is used to calm the overtaxed nervous system and induce relaxation, which will unlock the tightness in the body.

A strong emphasis is placed on breathing gently and evenly through the postures.

The class begin with some breathing exercises to establish diaphragmatic breathing which calms the nervous system and brings the mind to a one-pointed awareness.   This is followed by asana to increase flexibility, balance and strength, Pranayama – breath exercises and finishes with a blissful Yoga Nidra relaxation.

Please bring a yoga mat and a smile.
